Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi arrival

Arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a Tracks Berg Travel representative will whisks family members from the airport to the Norfolk Hotel, historic centerpiece of Nairobi and epitome of luxury since 1904.

Overnight at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel Nairobi

Meal Plan: {Bed & Breakfast}

Day 2: Explore Nairobi

Today will be a tour of Nairobi; our expert driver guide will pick you up from the Norfolk hotel.

08:00am – Start with a city tour of Nairobi

11:00am – Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

12:00 pm – Visit the Giraffe centre

13:00 hrs – Lunch at the Carnivore restaurant Giraffe Centre

14:30 hrs – Bomas of Kenya

16:00 hrs – Drive back to the Norfolk hotel

Nairobi City Tour: Today our adventure begins from our hotel. As we tour the city, we see the most interesting elements of Nairobi – Parliament buildings, Kenyatta International Conference Center, City market and 1998 US Embassy Bomb blast site in Nairobi.

 The city begun in 1899, and grew as a central point for the Kenya – Uganda Railway. Nairobi comes from the Masai word, "Enkare Nyrobi" meaning the "place of cool water". We then proceed to the David Sheldrick Orphanage

Daphne Sheldrick is a world–class conservation figure and the premier authority on the successful raising of milk–dependent infant elephant and rhino orphans. Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage can only be visited for an hour every day between 11am and noon.

During this hour the baby elephants are brought out to play and to feed, and visitors can watch them from behind a rope. Wardens are on hand to explain the work of the orphanage and to answer any questions.

After Lunch we visit The AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) Giraffe Centre is located in Karen, just outside Nairobi.

The centre has been ostensibly set up as a breeding centre for the endangered Rothschild giraffe, but now operates conservation/education programs for Kenyan school children.

There is good information on giraffes available here, and an elevated feeding platform where visitors meet the resident giraffes face to face.

Hand feeding giraffes is an education in itself. You will see, close at hand, how they use their long, prehensile tongues to remove leaves from prickly acacia branches.

The AFEW centre is also home to Giraffe Manor, a beautifully maintained colonial home, now an exclusive guesthouse.

The centre's giraffe population wanders freely through the lush gardens, and pays an occasional visit to the house itself, often pushing their heads through the French Windows to inspect the breakfast table.

Carnivore restaurant:

No Safari to Kenya would be complete without Lunch at the world-famous Carnivore restaurant, where you will dine on an endless supply of meat! Everyone who comes to Kenya must try the carnivore if they are true meat eaters.

Sample of the complete meat eating experience from regular meat to crocodile (all farm raised), camel etc. The restaurant also offers vegetarian dishes

Bomas of Kenya.

A ‘Bomas’ is a homestead and just a few minutes from the city center, numerous homesteads reflecting Kenya’s diverse cultures have been recreated for visitors both local and international to see the traditional village life. The main attraction is a visit to the display of the traditional dancing and folklore songs performed in the splendid arena.

After an exciting tour of Nairobi we proceed back to the hotel

Overnight at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel Nairobi

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 3: Nairobi – Drive to Lake Naivasha

Next, we overland to papyrus-fringed Lake Naivasha, a cool and peaceful escape from Nairobi’s big-city bustle. With over 400 species of bird, this freshwater lake is a birding Paradise.

Along the lake’s fabled waters, we are bound to see some of the area’s more intriguing species—hippos, giraffes, buffalo and even the arboreal colobus monkey.

Lake Naivasha lies in the Great Rift Valley and the name derives from the local Masai name Nai'posha, meaning "rough water" because of the sudden storms which can arise.

After lunch we visit Crescent island — a private sanctuary, where you can walk beneath yellow-barked acacias (yellow fever trees) in search of giraffes, wildebeest , impala , dikdiks, thompson’s and grant’s gazelles, elands, waterbucks and countless bird species.

Oh, and there are some rather gigantic pythons too! We are allowed to walk with the animals since all were introduced during the filming of Out of Africa. An optional boat ride on the lake reveals many water bird species and schools of Hippos.

Overnight at Naivasha Sopa Lodge

Meal plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 4: Lake Naivasha — Visit Lake Nakuru for a day trip — Lake Naivasha

After a delicious breakfast, we travel overland to Lake Nakuru National Park for a full day game viewing experience. The spectacular alkaline Lake is famously known as the feeding ground of both lesser and greater flamingos.

This National Park, which is fenced all round is a sanctuary for birds, Rothschild giraffes and both black and white-rhinos. Other mammals in abundance include Waterbucks, Buffalos, Gazelles, Lions, Baboons and the elusive Leopards sometimes seen sleeping on the horizontal branches of the “Fever trees”.

Lunch will be served at one of the lodges located in the Game Park, offering its own local specialties, served with fresh produce from the region. Later we retire to our delightful rooms with their four-poster beds of local woods and the ever-stoked fireplace. It is indulgent luxury that is thoroughly African.

Overnight at Naivasha Sopa Lodge

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 5: Lake Naivasha – Drive to Nairobi – Fly Masai Mara Game Reserve

After a leisure breakfast at Naivasha Sopa Lodge, depart overland to the Masai Mara Game Reserve-jewel of Kenya's Game Park. We return to Nairobi and fly to the Mara.

The Masai Mara is Kenya's finest and most outstanding wildlife sanctuary where gentle rolling grassland ensures animals are never out of sight. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well spread rainfall year round. The sensation of the great wildebeest migration between July and October is unparalleled.

The wildlife is far from being confined within the Reserve boundaries and an even larger area extends beyond the game Reserve. Centuries of close association with the wildlife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and Masai people live in peace with one another.

After lunch, explore the Reserve on a late evening game drive. No matter how much you have thought about Africa, this is more than you expected—the big five-Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Cape buffalo are in abundance.

Overnight at Mara Sarova Game Camp

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Days 6 & 7: Explore Masai Mara Game Reserve

We spend two nights here, giving us the luxury of time to appreciate the region’s rich wildlife by game drive or even Hot-Air Balloon. Zebra, wildebeest, topi and hippos are common, as are leopards, lions and cheetahs. We’ll also immerse ourselves in the Masai culture by visiting villages and schools, witnessing rituals and activities that have survived innumerable generations.

Our game drives are colored with bush lore courtesy of our expert guides, who also explain the dynamics of the wild and the importance of conservation. Young travelers can enjoy a Bush Treasure Hunt, while teens check out the Swahili Music.

Meanwhile, adults will appreciate Bush Sundowners—a civilized cocktail party staged in the untamed wilds of Africa—and a gourmet dinner. Kids, on the other hand, will feast on their favorites like pasta!

Overnight at Mara Sarova Game Camp

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 8: Masai Mara – Fly Nairobi – Fly Kilimanjaro – Fly Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is our destination today. The planet’s most amazing wildlife is on display here and the daily drama of this famous savannah will excite you.

We find ourselves deep in the heart of this famous migration corridor. With its wide-open spaces, bright blue skies and creature-filled landscape, over the next two days we will discover why the fabled Serengeti typifies the dream of “Old Africa.”

Large prides of lions laze in the long grasses; plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trumpet to each other across the plains, while giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland and the whole range of African wildlife present themselves in awe-inspiring numbers.

Overnight at Mbalageti Serengeti Lodge

Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Days 9 & 10: Discover Serengeti National Park

Two Serengeti game viewing days. The great diversity of Serengeti wildlife is also evident here—look for buffalo, hippopotamus, elephant, giraffe, antelope, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelle, lions, and in season the spectacular migration of the wildebeest. In late afternoon we venture out in another game drive.

Everywhere there are animals, monkeys and, yes, birds…but look closely and you will thrill to the huge jungle cats—lion, leopard and cheetah—just watching the world go by. And go by it does. Rhino, gazelle, antelope and massive elephants by the hundreds.

Animals in the trees, on the wing, camouflaged in the bush, in rivers and in streams. The adventure of a lifetime. Children will not only learn how to shoot an arrow, but how to make their own bow. If you aren’t feeling adventurous, bring the clan inside for some board games—the wilderness will be there when you’re ready.

Overnight at Mbalageti Serengeti Lodge

Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 11: Serengeti – Drive to Ngorongoro Crater

Our adventure today takes us to Ngorongoro Crater, where our lodge sits dramatically on the rim of the crater, revealing an awesome panorama of the world’s largest, unflooded and unbroken caldera.

We make a stop in the Great Rift Valley, the noted “Cradle of Mankind” where the Leakey family discovered human fossils which date back almost two million years, before continuing to Ngorongoro Crater.

Be prepared for some remarkable views down into the crater. The caldera of Ngorongoro marks the ancient walls of a collapsed volcano, which was probably once the size of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Today the completely enclosed circular crater is some twelve miles across, with steep walls of over 2,000 feet. We are at an altitude of approximately 7,500 feet above sea level, the highest point on our trip. After our time on the lower plains, the cooler air here is refreshing.

This afternoon enjoy a short nature walk to learn more about the local fauna, or just stay at the lodge and admire the view.

Overnight at Lemala Ngorongoro Luxury Camp

Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner}

Day 12: Discover Ngorongoro Crater

Early this morning we descend 2,000 feet to the crater floor to explore this natural zoological park, and observe an extraordinary variety of wildlife: elephant, rhinoceros, lion, hyena, zebra, wildebeest, Thomson's gazelle, reedbuck, and buffalo.

The lovely crested crane (similar to a peacock) can be found in great profusion here and maybe you'll spot a bat-eared fox. The balance of predator and prey in this extraordinary ecosystem is so precise that animals seldom leave.

Our exact route is decided on the spot by our expert safari guides, depending on where the animals are. An insider's tip: bring plenty of film-you may never take better wildlife photos anywhere else.

Ngorongoro Crater is said to be one of the natural wonders of the world. A spectacular game haunt, the 102-square-mile crater is a perfect caldera, one of the largest on earth. Millions of years ago a smoldering volcano collapsed, creating the crater and a home for thousands of animals amidst its many types of vegetation grown and nourished over the centuries.

Over 30,000 animals live here: prides of lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah and giraffe, gazelle by the thousands and multitudes of wildebeest. Uniquely beautiful, we will never see its likes again.

We spend a memorable morning ensconced in the crater, exploring its breadth and depth returning to the lodge for a late lunch. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure. The views from our lodge are outstanding and there are various outlooks from which you can survey the crater.

And tonight, as we delight in another luscious meal at this exceptional lodge, we are once again stunned by the beauty of the orange sunset that hovers in the wild African sky, signaling the end to yet another unforgettable day on safari.

Overnight at Lemala Ngorongoro Luxury Camp

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner}

Day 13 : Ngorongoro – Drive Lake Manyara – Fly Kilimanjaro– Fly Nairobi – Depart

We enjoy leisure breakfast and then we drive to Lake Manyara Airstrip, fly to Nairobi via Kilimanjaro International Air port.

The rest of your afternoon is at leisure. You might take this opportunity to visit our local stores. They displays items pertaining to Kenya and Tanzania's cultural heritage, and offers unique carvings, artifacts, clothing and gem stones to augment and expand the experiences you've had on your visit.

If you are returning to the United States, you have a day room available for the afternoon and dinner at the Hotel is included. As we leave Africa we know that the old adage is true: you may leave Africa, but Africa will never leave you.

Hello Erick,

I just want to say a big MERCI.

I am just back in Paris, and before being back to the everyday life, I just take some minutes

This complete trip was great, a very good idea to be on site the night before, and be already in the atmosphere.

I was really a happy day. I have seen so many animals, even if some of them have decided to stay hidden to force me to return, that i am sure I would not have seen in an other context . And elephants were fantastics!

Thank you to have explained so many things and also to have discussed a lot, in spite of my poor english, it was very interesting. I didn't take the time to look my photo, but I hope that some of them are good.
I hope that you had a good day yesterday, and you have sold all the books.

Kind regards

Elisabeth

Be sure that if I come back, I will take the time to do this again.

Hi Erick

Both Richard and I (Debra) would like to thank-you for our day out in Nakuru. It will remain in our memories for a long time. I would like to write a testimonial or write on your wall of fame to let others know what a great time we had and how we would strongly recommend your services.
I have passed on your card to more fellow Canadians who are planning to visit kenya.

I have never been so up close and personal with so many animals before this, ( in the wild ) the experience has been most exciting along with your knowledge and expertise really made our day.

Cheers

Hi Erick,

Thank you for so passionately hunting down and nailing all those incredible wildlife interactions and safari experiences for us yesterday! Your gifts for tracking and spotting animals is almost supernatural -- no wonder the other trackers in the park were constantly trying to follow you or ask you what you had spotted.

We were looking at our photos and just thrilled. I'll try to send the jackal puppy photos as soon as possible. You made Rich's day by asking to use one. : ) Later we'll upload our photos to a web site and send you a link in case there are any others you'd like to use.

We are packing this morning and found a khaki colored hat Rich must've accidentally taken because it looks like one of ours. We'll leave it for you at the desk at the City Lodge. Sorry about that!

Thanks truly, again for everything, Jaco!

Carey Ann

PS I don't know if you like to list testimonials from your guests on your web site. If you do, however, please feel free to use any part of this email as an endorsement on your web site -- also feel free to edit as you see fit. You can credit me as a TV producer for US documentary television (i.e. National Geographic television, TLC, PBS, Discovery Channel) if that'd be helpful to you.

Hi Erick,

I like to write thank you letters when they are deserved and following my trip with John last friday it is mostly definitely deserved! First of all thanks for organising everything at the last minute for me, it was my first time to East Africa and your website was an excellent resource, no-nonsense guide to the area. Secondly thanks for finding such an amazing guide as John is!

If you can send this on to john I would appreciate it. I was humbled by his sheer amount of knowledge on EVERYTHING in EA, I almost felt guilty, the guy was stuck with me for 18 hours and boy did I use those 18 hours to learn, not only about the intricacies of safari, the animals, the environment, but also about your country's history which is fascinating. It was so clear that John respected nature and his enthusiasm for finding the animals was infectious.

Thanks to John my 1-day Safari felt like I had experienced a week and has given me a hunger to come back to EA. Thank you!!

Sinan

Erick

I feel like it's been ages since we were in Serengeti - we've kept busy since our trip and my couch is looking quite inviting.

Just wanted to say again how much we enjoyed ourselves. The boys invoked you throughout the rest of the trip. "Erick would know"; "This would be funner if Erick were here"; "Do you think an ostrich would eat a cat?" "Which do you think is stronger?"

I am, however, disappointed to report that the prized serval pic came close, but no cigar. Clearly we are still warming up with our new camera and the focus just isn't there. Alas. Still thought you'd appreciate the almostness. I'm also tossing in a few more for good measure.

It was an absolute pleasure to spend our holidays in good company and to have seen so much in such a short amount of time.

I do hope our paths cross again. We'd love to take you to dinner next time you're hanging around London with nothing to do.

Cheers,
Steph and Rich (and the rest of the extended family)

Nairobi National Park Night Game Drives (2.5 Hours)

Nairobi National Park Night Game Drives are a more exciting way to spend a night in Nairobi. Nairobi National Park is completely different in the dark. The big cats come out to hunt and you will see animals you won't see during the day.

It’s a completely different world. Lions sleep all day and hunt in the evening, most of the cats are active just before and after sunset and this is when we take our guests on night game drives.

With a spotter and a light we look and listen for the animals, it’s an amazing experience. Animal behavior is quite different at night so observing the animals in the dark is a big part of any safari.

Karen Blixen Museum - Kenya Tours (Nairobi Excursion)

Karen Blixen Museum is located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

 At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen. The Danish government donated the house, and the surrounding land to Kenya after independence.

The house was restored by the Danish government, and was used during the filming of "Out of Africa" which immortalized Karen Blixen's book by the same name. The museum was opened to the public in 1986.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is located in Nairobi - as a capital city, is unique in having a wildlife park on its doorstep. Indeed the city abuts the Nairobi National Park on all but the southern perimeter so it is possible to photograph a rhino, browsing peace fully among the whistling thorn with high-rise office buildings in the backdrop.

Some of the wildlife is migratory and when vegetation and water are present outside the Park, they move out into Masai land through the unfenced southern boundary.

There is also a resident population of plains game and predators so a visit at any time of the year is a rewarding experience. Well laid out, with exceptionally well-maintained roads, the Park is a model for all others, geophysical and administratively.

 Of the most popular species only the elephant is an absentee. But the rest of the Big Five: leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino - as well as a multitude of other creatures are all well represented.
